Tenth Annual Route 66 Parade

Opened in 1926, Route 66 was the first highway to connect Chicago to Los Angeles. It was nicknamed the Main Street of America because it passed through the heart of communities, including Duarte, for more than 2,000 miles from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. Route 66 was decommissioned in 1973 when the interstate highway was completed, but the love and lore of Route 66 lives on.

Highlights of the parade:

* A salute to the California Highway Patrol, honoring the CHP for its 76 years of dedication to safety and service.

* The Salvation Army Tabernacle Band will make its first appearance in the Route 66 Parade, led by bandmaster, Bill Flinn, who is also CEO of the Tournament of Roses Parade.

* A tribute to the victims of Hurricane Katrina that will offer parade-goers an opportunity to contribute to the Salvation Army, providing food and shelter to Katrina victims and first responders in 12 states.

* Mexico Vivo! (Mexico Alive!), a non-profit folklorico troupe of more than 50 colorfully costumed dancers, most of them children from Duarte, as well as musicians, charros, escaramuza (the female equivalent of charros), and show horses, will celebrate the history and culture of Mexico. The Duarte chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens sponsors the entry.

* A float, donated by Fiesta Parade Floats, commemorating the 200th anniversary of City of Duarte’s namesake, Andres Duarte, who upon retirement from military service in 1841, was granted 6,595 acres of land by Governor Juan Alvarado that became the Rancho Azusa de Duarte.

* Reel Cowboys, a float featuring actors and stunt people from the golden days of the Hollywood western.
